TMJ or TMD: understanding the concern
TMJ is the temporomandibular joint—the hinge that connects the jaw to the skull. TMD is the broader term for disorders affecting the joint, the chewing muscles or both. Because jaw pain can come from different sources, EMFACE Functional TMJ is not a one-size-fits-all answer.
A functional consultation helps determine whether the concern appears muscle-related and whether another evaluation is needed. Joint injury, dental infection, a displaced disc, arthritis and other structural or medical causes may require a dentist, physician or orofacial pain specialist.
